Ghana is situated between the Cote d'Ivoire and Togo on the West Coast of Africa. From its picturesque coastal location to its wide range of attractions and amenities Ghana is one of the Continent's most beautiful countries. Ghana appeals to a diverse group of travelers. For those seeking a rich and vibrant culture, sun drenched beaches, ancient castles and dungeons, lush tropical forests, colorful festivals celebrating the chieftaincy, mouth-watering seafood and Africa's friendliest people, Ghana is a wonderful find. The city of Accra has been Ghana's capital since 1877, and contains fine public buildings reflecting its transition from a 19th century suburb of Victoriasborg to the modern metropolis it is today. Spreading along the Atlantic coast, the city is well endowed with luxury as well as great value hotels, excellent restaurants and nightclubs. The Central Region is the former government center of the Gold Coast. The Central Region is also famous for its palm-fringed beaches, fascinating fishing villages and historic towns. The castles along the coast of the Central Region are amongst the best preserved in Ghana. Not to be missed are Cape Coast Castle, Elmina Castle and Fort St. Jago. The Ashanti Region is a kingdom of gold, history and culture. This region is the hub of the ancient kingdom of the Asante, and still the heartland for all Asante, wherever they may now be. A visit to Ashanti must include Kumasi, the ancient capital of the region founded in 1695 by the Asantehene, Osei Tutu, where palaces, museums, forts and churches reveal the distinct cultural and historic backdrop for the festivals and ceremonials that are still important today. |
